Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022
This architectural photograph presents a wide horizontal view of a contemporary exhibition hall captured during evening twilight. Scanning from left to right across the composition, the leftmost area contains a sculptural installation of approximately twenty vertical metallic elements, their surfaces polished to catch and reflect ambient light, clustered in organic arrangement against a pale gray wall. Moving rightward, a dark rectangular opening in the gray wall suggests a secondary entrance or passage. The central third of the image features the main pavilion, distinguished by vertical timber louvers in warm honey and amber tones that wrap around a fully glazed facade, through which soft interior illumination glows. These timber battens create a rhythmic pattern of light and shadow, their warm coloring reminiscent of golden wheat or sunlit bamboo. The building's roof curves gently upward at center in a wave-like profile, its dark edge creating a strong horizontal line against the sky. Flanking the central pavilion, smooth aluminum panels in cool blue-gray extend outward, their matte surfaces contrasting with the warm timber. A long rectangular reflecting pool stretches across the foreground, its still water mirroring the illuminated pavilion and creating a sense of doubled light. The approach pathway of pale gray stone tiles leads directly toward the entrance, its linear joints guiding the eye forward. The sky above transitions from warm cream near the horizon through soft blue to deeper azure, suggesting the moments just after sunset when artificial and natural light achieve balance. The overall atmosphere conveys tranquility and measured ceremony, as if the building awaits visitors with patient hospitality.
The building is located at XiaoshanInnovation Polis, and being adjacent to the lake in the place is the landscape advantage that has added the smart sense of the Jiangnan watery town. The herringbone sloping roofs and the minimalist white walls and black tiles elements give a vivid visual impression, forming an overall continuous and rhythmic picture. The herringbone undulating roof brings a rich state of space, and which seems to be a sign of the designer’s preference for the endless mountains.
