Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022
This image presents a spacious museum gallery interior photographed in landscape orientation, spanning approximately twice as wide as it is tall. Beginning with overall orientation, you are looking down a long corridor-like gallery space with pristine white walls and ceiling extending into the distance, where the space appears to continue around corners and through additional rooms. The floor beneath consists of polished marble in soft silvery grey tones with subtle darker grey veining running in diagonal patterns, creating a surface that might feel cool and smooth like river stones worn by water. In the left foreground, positioned prominently, stands a large freestanding white wall panel that functions as a display surface, and mounted upon it hangs an impressive portrait painting enclosed in an elaborate golden frame with deeply carved scrollwork and decorative flourishes that catch the light like honey-colored metal worked into organic flowing patterns. The portrait depicts a woman in formal dress, her gown featuring rich burgundy red tones suggesting crushed velvet warmth against darker elements. To the left of this dominant painting, on the perpendicular wall, hang four smaller portraits arranged in a grid of two over two, each in gilded frames of varying ornamental complexity. Moving rightward along the composition, additional white partition walls recede into the middle distance, each bearing portrait paintings in gold and dark wood frames, creating a rhythm of display surfaces like pages in an opened book. The right side of the gallery features a long continuous wall extending deep into the space, lined with a procession of framed portraits in various sizes, their gold frames creating warm accents against the cool white surface. Natural light enters from windows positioned high along the right wall, creating soft, even illumination throughout without harsh shadows, the quality of light suggesting an overcast day or north-facing orientation. The ceiling appears flat and white with subtle linear elements and small recessed light fixtures. The overall atmosphere feels hushed, reverent, and spacious, like a sanctuary dedicated to contemplation of human likeness across centuries.
In the 1960's modern building of the National Gallery in Athens, the exhibition rooms are designed like a promenade in open space. The interior is designed as a sequence of wooden lined transitional areas for information, and of white exhibition rooms with specially designed suspended ceilings for each exhibition function. Controlling the directions of gaze, the depth of view in the rooms and towards the city, the general lighting in relevance with the exterior light, and subduing the materials and the technical details to highlight the works of art, the space gives an affect of free choice.
