Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
This interior space presents an open-plan workplace environment viewed from an elevated position looking across an expansive floor toward full-height windows revealing an urban skyline beyond. Beginning in the immediate foreground, an extraordinary sculptural bench commands attention, constructed from dozens of parallel wooden ribs arranged to create a flowing, wave-like seating surface approximately three meters in length, the warm amber and caramel tones of the laminated timber suggesting smooth, cool wood beneath one's fingertips. Moving beyond this parametric furniture piece, the middle ground reveals a social area furnished with low-slung modernist armchairs upholstered in charcoal gray leather, their squared forms providing geometric contrast to the organic bench nearby, gathered around small circular side tables suggesting intimate conversation groupings. Rising from the floor at intervals stand cylindrical columns wrapped entirely in preserved moss, their surfaces ranging from deep forest green to bright chartreuse, creating vertical accents of botanical presence that would feel cool and slightly springy to touch. Dominating the central composition floats a large elliptical ring finished in warm wood veneer, suspended from the ceiling and outlined with integrated lighting that creates a gentle glow, from within this hovering form cascade numerous slender pendant lights creating a luminous curtain effect. The ceiling above presents exposed mechanical infrastructure painted in dark tones, overlaid with dozens of curved acoustic baffles in pale birch plywood that sweep and overlap like frozen ribbons or unfurling fabric, their surfaces suggesting smooth, lightweight material. Natural daylight enters abundantly through floor-to-ceiling windows occupying the far wall, the cool white light of an overcast sky mixing with warmer artificial illumination to create comfortable ambient brightness. The floor beneath appears to be polished terrazzo or similar composite material in warm gray tones with subtle aggregate patterns, its surface smooth and cool underfoot. The overall atmosphere suggests creative workplace energy balanced with contemplative calm, a space designed for both focused work and collaborative gathering.
Inspired by Becton Dickinson's "BD" consolidation exercise of key business units into one single floorplate, designers knew they wanted to enable a blended community space, for the various tribes of BD to come together, unite and promote cohesions with one common language. This common language was articulated with a strong design language that formed the narrative for the different experiential journeys within the space.
